ShareText

ShareText can be used to send small amounts of text between devices without using any cables or network connections.

ShareText is now available on the app store.

Using ShareText

To share text on your device:

  1. Copy the text to the clipboard.
  2. Start ShareText
  3. Show the QR code that appears on the screen to another device’s camera.

Scan me!

If the other device has a hard time scanning your code, you can reduce the amount of text in the code by tapping the code, selecting a smaller block of text, choosing copy, then tapping the text. The new code will have the newly copied block of text.

To read text from another device:

  1. Launch ShareText
  2. Tap the camera button on toolbar.
  3. Frame the QR code inside the white rectangle.

Once the QR code is scanned, the text will be displayed on screen and copied to the clipboard for easy use in other apps.

Tap the text that appears on the screen to turn the clipboard contents back into a QR code, and tap the QR code to see the text it contains.

Troubleshooting

The quality of a device’s camera, glare, and the amount of text can impact how long a QR code takes to be scanned. If your codes are taking too long to scan, try:

  1. Using a little less text. QR codes with more information can take longer to read.
  2. Positioning the device that’s displaying the QR code so that there’s no glare on the screen.
  3. Adjusting the “QR Level” in the ScanPass settings. The “QR Level” corresponds to how much error correction information is encoded inside the QR code. Different devices seem to have an easier time at different levels, but most work quickest at “L.”
